I have refused to teach myself nukitsuke and noto. I don't have a problem with this, though I am sure my disregard for tradition would probably irritate a lot of Japanese Sword Art trained people. I can use the thing very well, but HOW I'm using it is applying WMA to an unfamiliar sword. Once the katana (or whatever) is out of the saya I'm good. We both eventually joined WMA organizations and filled in the missing pieces in our technique with what other had figured out. We'd ask a few questions online sometimes for clarification, but for the most part, the first three years was self taught. We'd go to a park or a yard, plunk down the new manual on the grass and try not to kill each other too much. We would find a manuscript, print it off, often at a Kinko's so it could be spiral bound. I just knew they could cut engine blocks in half, came in handy for disposing of Christopher Lambert's arch-enemies and might scare off Sho Kosugi if he and his Ninja flunkies intended on kidnapping your girlfriend.Ī friend and I decided to teach ourselves WMA back when it wasn't all figured out.
